Being able to assemble a diverse team of people who work well together and thereafter constantly improve their performance is an art. Different jobs require distinctive personal qualities, characteristics and talents as well as professional qualifications and experience - and getting these personalities to work together is by any stretch not easy. Often enough personalities are not compatible but their traits are absolutely necessary to manage the variety of tasks on hand and in order to succeed they must all work together like clockwork.

More often than not we are tempted to hire people who are like us, have similar likes and dislikes and who have a similar character, thinking that if we all get along the rest will take care of itself.  Or we hire those who have qualities that we personally don’t have, expecting that they will compensate for our perceived weaknesses. But nothing is further from reality.

If you are in charge of hiring it is important for you to put your personal preferences aside and look carefully at how a candidate fulfills the requirements for the job including soft factors such as personality traits and character.

The world is colorful and made up of all kinds of people. Having an outgoing personality at the front desk and someone more detail oriented on top of cleaning or accounting makes much more sense, than having a monoculture of one or the other.

A good way to take the emotional factor out of hiring is to systemize the process of recruiting and hiring while saving a considerable amount of time and money in the long run. This is not to say that one should sacrifice a “gut feeling” but rather introduce a more rational approach and base decisions also on sound findings. The sooner you set up a system the better. An organized approach has the advantage of creating a fair and unbiased decision when hiring a new employee, giving more certainty to a decision and eliminating doubts while at the same time being able to check off all essential questions that when unasked might rear their heads at a time when it is too late or difficult to take action.

Of course a system is not the silver bullet. We all make mistakes when hiring, but it will increase your chances of hiring the right person.

Everyone wants the best employees and it is up to you to not only develop a clear idea of who you want but what you want to offer in exchange for their contribution, but also to be creative in the recruiting process. The best employees are often found with unconventional ways and not necessarily in the dedicated classified section of the newspaper and added effort is necessary to find those gems.
